'Courage under fire' |
 |
This is a unique story
from the time when the Japanese occupied the Philippines. It
is a true story of courage and one employee's action above and
beyond what was expected of him.
'On the evening of February 22, 1945, Joe, a staff in the Standard
Chartered Bank current accounts department and four platoons
of guerrilla fighters - almost 30 men - left the mountains near
Siniloan and travelled through the night by foot to the Japanese
concentration camp outside Manila. That was where his Bank manager,
Mr Whatey, was being held. During the march through the rice
paddies, Joe lost his shoes.
