New opportunities: Davidson’s story

Growing up I’d always respected the law. Despite there being no history of lawyers in my family, I was driven by a desire to deliver justice within society. Luckily, I was able to find a New York University graduate who was able to act as a mentor and help me navigate the legal environment.
I moved from private practice to the bank in 2013 so that I could play a bigger part in making business decisions and help mitigate risks. I knew I had the potential to add a lot of value from within. I also have this insatiable thirst for knowledge and self-improvement which I use to help the bank in whatever way I can. As well as being the Senior Country Legal Counsel in Kenya, I’m currently studying for my Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) at United States International University – Africa (USIU-Africa) in Nairobi. I’m looking forward to sharing my final work with our Country CEO to see how my studies can be put into practice.

Earlier this year I spent three months in Singapore within the Global Data and Technology Operations Legal team on a secondment. This was the first time I’d taken on some project management work, and I was surprised by how much we covered in just three months. As well as giving me the chance to travel around South-East Asia, it also gave me a global view on the impact that our work can have across our footprint.
My Singapore assignment gave my Nairobi team the opportunity to take on new projects, develop their skills and gain experience in different areas. Part of the culture within the Legal function, no matter where you work, is the feeling of empowerment, and the chance to make your own decisions. This freedom enables you to determine your own career path which is a gift.
A career at Standard Chartered can give you a lifetime of opportunities. But it requires you to be bold and go out and make the most of the network and global footprint. For me, the sky’s the limit.
