Kenny Chow, Compliance Associate, Retail Banking, Singapore
Prior to joining the Bank, I was working full time in the education sector while simultaneously completing my business management degree. Don’t laugh, but the ambition was partially inspired by the fast-paced work culture portrayed in the American legal drama Suits.
I was fortunate to find a role in the Bank’s talent acquisition department in Human Resources in 2016, on a one-year contract basis which I saw as a stepping stone in the corporate world. Within a few months, my role had been expanded and I was quickly learning new skills and knowledge on the job, which in turn led to my current role.

Having grown fond of the Bank’s culture, open work environment, and of course the people, I was keen to stay on and so, supported by my manager, I applied for a vacancy within the Retail Banking compliance team and was thrilled to be offered the position. Over the course of my time at the Bank, I’d learnt to appreciate interacting with colleagues of diverse backgrounds. Plus, I loved how easy it was to have open discussions without being conscious of seniority. This is the kind of culture I thrive in.
“I found that Standard Chartered fervently supports and invests in learning and development for its people.”
My new role was exciting, but I also felt trepidation as I had so much to learn. But I found that Standard Chartered fervently supports and invests in learning and development for its people. It’s up to us as individuals to reskill and/or upskill as part of our continuous learning journey, but the resources are plentiful and accessible. One of the courses I applied for was on an advanced certificate in governance risk and compliance, accredited by the Institute of Banking and Finance. It was just like going back to school – I would attend evening classes once a week (after a day’s work) over four months, with assignments to complete and a final examination to sit.
The process of learning a new skill comes with challenges, but I found once I’d put my mind to it, and gave it my all, I gained a new level of confidence and immense satisfaction.
