Reflecting on my career journey

How have you got to where you are now in your career? Tell us about your career journey so far?
Reflecting on my career journey, I am deeply grateful for the diverse and rewarding opportunities that have shaped my path. After earning a BSc in Computer/Electronics Engineering from the University of Lagos in 2006, I began my career in Systems and Network Administration. This foundational experience paved the way for my transition into Cybersecurity implementations, Audit & Advisory and Training, where I had the privilege of working with clients across a range of industries, including Financial Services, Retail, Government, Healthcare, and Insurance. Each engagement expanded my expertise, as I helped organizations navigate and resolve complex cybersecurity challenges. I’ll later go on to obtain a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity from EC-Council University, New Mexico, USA in 2012
In 2015, I relocated to the UAE, joining a Big-Four consulting firm, and by 2017, I had taken on the role of Head of Business Information Security at a regional bank, overseeing cybersecurity governance, risk and compliance for Corporate, Retail, and International Operations. My journey continued in 2021 when I joined Standard Chartered Bank. Here, I have had the opportunity to contribute to the broader cyber team and the development and implementation of comprehensive cybersecurity strategies on a global scale, not only within the regions under my remit but across the Group, further enriching my professional experience.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to continuously embrace change and stay adaptable. Early in my career, a mentor once told me, ‘In technology, stagnation is the enemy.’ This advice has stayed with me throughout my journey, from my early days in as a Systems & Network Administrator to my current role in Cybersecurity. The several industries I’ve worked in — Financial Services, Healthcare, Oil & Gas, and more — are constantly evolving, and so must we as professionals. Being open to learning, adapting to new challenges, and viewing change as an opportunity for growth have been instrumental in shaping my career. It’s what allowed me to take bold steps, such as moving to a new country and shifting industries, while staying committed to the broader mission of helping organisations secure their business operations. By stepping outside of my comfort zone and embracing new roles and responsibilities, I’ve been able to expand my skillset and gain a broader perspective on the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced when working?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my career has been navigating the complexities of scaling cybersecurity solutions across diverse and rapidly evolving environments. When I transitioned into leadership roles, particularly in the UAE and later with Standard Chartered Bank, I have had to ensure that cybersecurity practices and frameworks were not only robust but also adaptable to different regulatory, cultural, and operational requirements across regions like Middle East and Africa. This required balancing global cybersecurity standards with local nuances, all while addressing resource constraints and rapidly changing cyber threats. It remains a demanding task, but overcoming this challenge deepened my understanding of the global cybersecurity landscape and sharpened my ability to lead in dynamic, high-stakes environments.
If you didn’t do the job you do now, what would be your other career choice?
If I weren’t in my current role, I would likely pursue a career that combines my love for photography and traveling. Exploring new places has always been a passion of mine, and photography allows me to capture unique perspectives and tell stories through images. Whether as a travel photographer or perhaps even a documentary filmmaker, I would love to explore different cultures and landscapes while using visuals to convey meaningful narratives. It’s a path that, like cybersecurity, requires attention to detail, creativity, and adaptability — skills I’ve honed throughout my career.
