Developing my Career: Jason’s Story

I’ve always been interested in learning things I’m not familiar with. Before joining the Standard Chartered team in Taiwan as an international graduate in 2013, I knew I wanted to develop a career in banking. I’d studied finance and figured banking was the right path for me.

Starting out

I wanted to work with Standard Chartered from the very beginning. If I could choose one work to describe the bank, it would be dynamic. Standard Chartered’s International Graduate programme was fantastic. It provided real international exposure and enabled me to learn about all aspects of the industry. The experience was enriched by my other graduate colleagues, who supported me throughout. It was the gateway into a rewarding career in banking.

My career journey

I’ve always loved travelling. During college, I spent two summers in Africa and learnt a lot during my time there. Standard Chartered has given me the opportunity to experience working in different places. Since joining the bank, I’ve had a short-term assignment in Hong Kong, which introduced me to the Corridor banking system.

I’ve also spent some time in Thailand, which was a particular highlight for me. The team was incredibly welcoming. I learnt that professionalism is the common language even in different markets and countries. I’m grateful to all the experts who provided me with learning and assistance while I was there.

I’ve been part of the Corporate, Commercial and Institutional Banking team (CCIB) since joining Standard Chartered. I currently work as a Relationship Manager and am the Associate Director of Client Coverage. I coordinate different products from different markets to corporate clients.

The thing I love most about my role is that it presents challenges that sharpen my capability and spirit. I’ve gained a good understanding of the bank’s different initiatives and learnt more about being resilient when working. The CCIB function of the bank is a very interesting and niche market. The working environment is friendly and supportive, and the team is well-structured.

Overcoming challenges

In any job, there will be plenty of challenges to overcome. It’s your attitude towards these challenges that matters most. During my time at Standard Chartered, the biggest challenge for me has been dealing with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Handling the effects of the pandemic in Thailand was particularly difficult.

The pandemic also completely reshaped the way we work. I learnt to adopt a positive mindset and find practical solutions to problems. One of my favourite quotes is ‘be the positive power to change the world’, which I think is very inspiring. Work hard and encourage others to work hard, too. I also think it’s really important to switch off from work and recharge your brain sometimes, and I always put aside time to spend with friends and family.

For people starting out in their banking career, I would advise them to worry less and strive for what they want to achieve. You won’t know how things will work out until you try.
