Harnessing the latest technologies to improve the banking experience – Petersingh’s story

As a Lead Python Developer for the Commercial Analytics Platform Team, Petersingh is responsible for utilising the latest technologies to support the front-line team to communicate and interact with their clients.

What drew you to your role in the technology team at Standard Chartered?

I was initially attracted to my role within Standard Chartered’s technology team as there was a job opening that perfectly fit my career aspirations. At the time, I was working as a Python Developer and I had over nine years of experience within the industry. Some of my relatives were also working for Standard Chartered and they regularly shared their positive experiences of the working culture and how the Bank utilises the newest technologies. I wanted to be a part of an organisation that prioritises its employee's development whilst providing exciting and unique opportunities, so I felt like the role was a perfect fit. I have been with Standard Chartered for seven months and I haven’t looked back!

What do you love the most about your job?

I genuinely love working with Standard Chartered, but the aspect I love the most about my role is the opportunity to work with the newest technologies. I am passionate about technology so it is an honour to have the opportunity to harness the latest and cutting-edge technological advancements to improve the banking experience for our clients and my colleagues.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far in your role?

During a time-sensitive project, my team and I identified an issue in the system we were developing. Due to the complex nature of the system, it was difficult to identify what was causing the issue. I worked tirelessly to find what was causing the problem, but unfortunately, the time we spent identifying the issue set us behind schedule. I was determined to deliver the system on time, so I worked quickly to develop and deploy a solution. I was able to do this within a week, which meant we were able to complete the project within the desired timeframe. This was greatly appreciated by my team and the senior management at the Bank and I was very proud of what I was able to achieve under pressure.

What would you say to someone thinking about making the move from a technology organisation to Standard Chartered?

Contrary to popular belief, most banks do not prioritise implementing the newest technologies into their operations. Despite this, Standard Chartered are very sophisticated and is aware of the immense benefits that technology can bring to its clients and employees. Having previously worked in an organisation that is centred around the development of technology, I have noticed little difference since joining Standard Chartered. I would encourage anyone thinking about making the move to Standard Chartered to go for it! It is very rewarding to utilise your skills to elevate the banking experience of our clients.
