How Standard Chartered’s Fast-Track Graduate Scheme helped Zibo Kenosi to return to Standard Chartered with her dream role

A twist of fate led Zibo Kenosi to train within the Consumer Banking function at Standard Chartered, but it was her hard work and determination that led to her success.

Standard Chartered’s Fast-Track Graduate Scheme gives university leavers the opportunity to apply their newly learned skills in the real world. Zibo Kenosi graduated from the scheme with flying colours, propelling her into a flourishing career within the banking industry.

How did the Fast-Track Graduate Scheme prepare you for your career?

Prior to starting the Fast-Track Graduate Scheme at Standard Chartered, I had studied Psychology at university. I hoped to work in the HR department so that I could utilise the knowledge from my degree, but unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. I was disappointed at first, but after my first day as a Graduate Trainee in the Consumer Banking function, I was thankful for the twist of fate. I spent 12 months rotating in the various consumer banking departments and I gained valuable knowledge of the banking industry. My time as a Graduate Trainee helped me to adopt a holistic approach to work and shifted my career perspective.

How has your career progressed since completing the Fast-Track Graduate scheme?

After graduating from the Fast-Track Graduate Scheme, I landed my first role at Standard Chartered as a Product Manager in the Personal Loan function. I was responsible for managing product lifecycles and assisting customers with their requirements. I worked closely with senior managers, who advised me through the early stages of my career and supported my development. I spent the next three years progressing through various management roles before leaving Standard Chartered to undertake a position at a different bank. In this role, I broadened my knowledge of the banking industry and fine-tuned my skills. In 2019 I was offered my dream role with Standard Chartered and three years later, I am still thoroughly enjoying it.

What is your current role?

I am currently the Business Planning Manager to the CEO at Standard Chartered Botswana. Since beginning my career in banking, I have aspired to have this position and I am incredibly proud of myself for achieving it. My position has been challenging as it has forced me out of my comfort zone, but it is equally rewarding and my accomplishments are recognised by the Bank. Standard Chartered has provided me with numerous opportunities to learn new skills and develop my knowledge during my time as a Business Planning Manager, which has drastically improved my ability to excel in my current role.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

The corporate world is designed for extroverted individuals, so as an introvert I have sometimes struggled to position myself amongst my colleagues. I have had immense support from management which has helped me to come out of my shell and feel comfortable sharing my ideas. As I have advanced through my career, I have identified that my individuality cannot be replicated. Trusting in my uniqueness, knowledge and expertise has helped me to make space for myself in the workplace.

What has been your most memorable experience with Standard Chartered?

Attending the launch of one of Standard Chartered’s solar-powered branches is one of my most notable experiences at the Bank. Standard Chartered is dedicated to sustainability and I was filled with pride to be associated with an organisation that works so hard to materialise its pledges.
