Jennifer Kang – Pushing boundaries and holding myself accountable
Jennifer, Head, Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing in Taiwan tells us what motivates her to succeed
How did you get into a career in banking?
A job ad came out in Brunei and I thought it would be a challenging new adventure so I just went for it and applied!
How have you got to where you are now?
I believe through being passionate in what I do, hard work, courage to try new things, good support and guidance from various colleagues and People Leaders, others believing in me, asking for opportunities and making your ambition known.
Nice, what’s been your biggest challenge so far at the Bank?
There have been so many! When I moved markets, there were many challenges, as I had to adapt to the new environment, culture, ways of working; networking and stakeholder/ people management, so there was a lot to learn!
If you didn’t do what you do now, what would you do?
I would want to be a food writer or a hair stylist (not that I have skills in either but I think I would enjoy both.)
What do you do outside of work?
I love cooking, exploring, eating, entertaining friends and travelling. Oh and I like to play Wordle in the mornings while on my commute to work on the bus – it keeps my mind sharp!
Any new skills you’re trying to learn?
Mandarin as it is helpful in my new role. I started when I was applying for this new role, once I found out that it was important in Taiwan.
Do things that your future role requires of you now.
Tell us how you live by Standard Chartered’s values?
In everything I do, I ask myself- is this the right thing to do? This really helps in setting the scene for myself. I believe great things come when people collaborate. Bringing people together and working collaboratively is something I believe in. At this time, in my new role in Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing in Taiwan, I have worked to realign our team and change the way we work for better collaboration. In terms of never settle- I look for opportunities to continue to push boundaries and do things even if it is out of my comfort zone.
And finally, describe Standard Chartered in 3 words
Fulfilling, happy and an adventure.
