Making a difference: Cenk’s story

Cenk is proof that hard work, determination and a drive to do good can result in amazing opportunities

As a young person at the start of my career, I craved opportunities to make an impact. I was searching for a purpose: to be something or somewhere where I could make a positive difference. It took me a long time to realise the positive impact banks can have. That realisation went against the stereotype of financial services that I’d read in the media, but I soon discovered that financial services companies are in a unique position to bring greater prosperity to local communities.

I come from a modest background in Turkey. My parents were teachers and instilled in me the importance of hard work, and because of this hard work, opportunities have presented themselves. I have a drive inside of me and an inner confidence to reach for the top. This confidence took me to Harvard, and has allowed me to work for some of the most respected organisations in the world. I have also taken the opportunity to build a network of politicians, states people and global leaders through volunteer work with the organisations Relief International and Teach a Man to Fish.

Whatever you give out to the world, it comes back a thousand fold.

In 2010 I was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum (Davos Summit) as one of the top 100 global leaders under the age of 40, which was an incredible honour. Among other reasons, it was awarded to me because of my volunteer work, so this was proof to me that whatever you give out to the world, it comes back a thousand-fold. If you are open, the universe will present opportunities and then it’s down to you to make the most of them.

Joining Standard Chartered has given me the opportunity to continue to make a positive difference. My role is to connect clients and colleagues across our footprint to help drive sustainable growth. I’m delighted so many of my contacts over the years seem to be joining the Bank for the same reasons I joined. We are attracting amazing talent through our unique footprint and capabilities, which is exciting for the future.
