Making a seamless switch from an engineering degree

Saood Ahli

Saood Ali Ahli joined Standard Chartered’s graduate programme two years ago, and has been able to make a seamless switch from an engineering degree to a banking career.

Where did you go to university, and what subject did you study?

I studied at Electrical Engineering at the American University of Sharjah.

What drew you to apply to Standard Chartered?

I applied to the Standard Chartered UAE graduate programme because it provided the opportunity that I wanted to transition from engineering to banking and finance. Standard Chartered’s diverse culture and global footprint made me confident that the Bank would give me the opportunity to build on my skills and experience to truly excel in my new career.

Had you always wanted to work in banking?

I’ve always been drawn to banking because of its dynamic nature and the impact it has on economies and businesses. The industry offers endless opportunities to tackle high-profile client’s banking needs, structure innovative and bespoke financing solutions, and drive economic growth. Even while studying engineering, I always had a passion and curiosity towards financials markets, investments, and the role the global banks play in shaping the industry.

How has your career progressed since you joined us? Can you tell us about the learning and development you’ve received?

I started my career with Standard Chartered on the UAE local graduate programme tailored for UAE nationals exhibiting high potential. This provided me with a solid foundation in banking and finance, enabling me to develop my skills in manging client relationships and my knowledge with bespoke banking products. I then worked as a Credit Analyst, which honed my credit skills and gave me a deeper understanding of corporate credit risk assessment and financial analysis. Over time I got promoted and moved to an Assistant Relationship Manger role.

Tell us about a project you’ve worked on that has made you proud?

I’m incredibly proud to have been selected for the NAFIS Leadership Program (NLP), an initiative under the UAE Prime Minister Office (PMO) designed to develop high potential Emiratis into future leaders in the private sector. With a highly competitive selection rate of 2-3%, this opportunity is both a privilege and a responsibility – one that I’m eager to embrace. I’m looking forward to learning, growing, and contributing alongside a group of exceptional peers who share a vision for shaping the future of leadership in the UAE private sector.

How would you describe the culture at the Bank?

The culture is a blend of collaboration, innovation, and purpose. As an employee, you feel part of a diverse and inclusive team that values different perspectives and encourages ownership and proactive thinking.

Could you use three words to describe life at Standard Chartered?
