My journey as the Director of Priority Private Banking at Standard Chartered, Malaysia – Chloe’s story

I am passionate about finance and how I can harness my knowledge of fund management to help people to achieve their goals. I am the type of person that likes to learn continuously, so the dynamic nature of the banking industry appealed to me. Since joining Standard Chartered, Malaysia as the Director of Priority Private banking over five years ago, I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey with my incredible team and our clients. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

What makes working at Standard Chartered unique?

I can confidently say that the diverse people at Standard Chartered make the Bank a unique place to work at. As the Bank has such an international footprint, I have had the opportunity to get to know my colleagues from across the world. I enjoy learning about my colleague's cultures and I have definitely benefited from the diverse perspectives and advice shared by my colleagues. Everyone at Standard Chartered is a pleasure to work with and I have made lifelong friends along the way.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your role?

The current extreme market volatility has resulted in some huge losses for my clients and this has been extremely challenging for my team and I. We have worked very hard over the last five years to nurture the relationships with our clients so it has been incredibly difficult to navigate the losses they have incurred due to the economic downturn. We are all hoping that the market improves in the coming year, but I have unwavering confidence that my team and I will continue to draw upon our experience to improve things for our clients in the meantime.

What’s been your most memorable experience with Standard Chartered?

Despite the challenges posed by the current market conditions, I have found it incredibly rewarding to help my clients to minimise their losses. They are very grateful for our hard work and I have developed my skills through the experience. I will remember what my team and I were able to support our clients to overcome and I am very proud of our resilience in the face of adversity.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work at Standard Chartered?

Standard Chartered is a goal-oriented organisation that celebrates its employee's successes. I would advise anyone hoping to work with the Bank to learn about the strategy behind how Standard Chartered achieves its objectives and identify how their strengths could contribute to the Bank’s growth. It is important that everyone at Standard Chartered aligns with our values of doing the right thing, being better together and never settle, as they are intrinsic to the success of daily operations. Most importantly, I would encourage anyone looking to work at the Bank to be themselves, as individuality and diversity are widely celebrated at Standard Chartered.
