Thomas Loye – My progression to Relationship Manager
Thomas shares what it's like working for Standard Chartered in Malaysia in Consumer, Private and Business Banking.
I started my career in the banking industry as a Customer Service Representative and progressed into the role of Relationship Manager after two years. I joined Standard Chartered in 2010 and I’ve been with the Bank for 11 years now. The bank’s diverse and inclusive culture attracted me here; and I've made some really good friends along the way.
What do you think is the key to success?
The battle is half won by just being in an organisation that is committed in creating value and providing world class financial services to clients. Access to advanced technological tools and platforms has simplified my work processes allowing me to spend more time in strengthening my relationship with my loyal and happy clients.
What’s the best thing about your role at Standard Chartered?
I really enjoy meeting and talking to clients. I appreciate being able to discuss and help with their financial goals. Getting to know different clients from all walks of life is amazing and it is a real pleasure to learn about their life or career journeys. This contributes to my personal knowledge and growth as well.
Are there any quotes you live by?
Believe in yourself, don’t give up and success will take care of itself. Also, don’t judge people by how they look. Treat every client fairly and professionally and seek to understand their needs to best assist them to achieve their financial goals.
And finally, what is your passion outside of work?
Coffee brewing! If I were to change career, I would be a barista. I like to talk to café owners and baristas, learning about what they do and discuss different types of coffee together.
People say being a Relationship Manager is like a financial doctor. Upon ‘diagnosis’, I will do my best to provide advice and solutions to achieve their goals financially.
