Working for Standard Chartered
Integrity, changing and reliable - that's how I would describe Standard Chartered
We’re hiring Relationship Managers into our Wealth and Retail Banking (WRBB) team.
Mathew shares what it's like being a Relationship Manager in Retail Banking.
Are there any quotes you live and work by?
Talent without working hard, is nothing.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
You should try to focus on what you really need, not how to impress others.
What was your first job?
As a customer service agent in an aviation service company.
What has been your career path, to get where you are now?
After I left the aviation services, I joined a bank as a Counter Service and General Banking Officer. I then joined another bank, sales role, by the time I left them, I was a Relationship Manager, which meant I joined Standard Chartered as a Relationship Manager, the role I’m in now.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced when working?
To motivate myself when facing obstacles. A significant part of our role relates to sales results, which can be influenced by a lot of uncertain factors; the economic market, stability of Hong Kong, Covid-19 etc. We’ve had to find a way to adapt, so we can perform well in these different market situations.
If you didn’t do the job you do now, what would be your other career?
I don’t know really. Maybe I would be a salesperson of luxury watches, automobiles or personal trainer of fitness.
How have you built flexibility into your every day?
My flexibility is built on discipline. I prioritise my tasks, so I’m not driven by endless ad-hoc tasks. I start my day with a checklist to review my client portfolios. It helps me decide if there’s anything I need to urgently arrange for that day. After this I have client meetings. By the end of the day I’ll shift my focus to finding new prospects.
