“This has surely given me growth in terms of having experience in the biggest trade market for Standard Chartered,” says Neeraj. Working with more colleagues from different cultures has also improved his people management skills, he adds.

Neeraj’s tips for moving internationally
- Always speak to colleagues and people in your network to get some know-how on the location you are moving to. This can help you understand the local way of life.
- Make a checklist of important things which are non-negotiable for your situation and lifestyle.
- Do your research! Nowadays, so much information is available online.
- Connect with your new team members and start conversations before you move. This helps break the ice so when you move, you’re more comfortable with them, and them with you.
- Make time to read about and understand the local cultural practices, both in terms of general living and work-related ones.
- Be open and ready to accept the local way of living – in the same way as you would want them to accept you.
