Hasham Asif, Assistant Relationship Manager, Commercial Banking

Pakistan

In May 2017, I travelled to Myanmar to play my part in doing something good where it was really needed. I have always wanted to be a philanthropist, therefore when I heard about the volunteer work that employees can become involved with through the organisation, I knew that I had to put myself forward.

I visited the Bago Region as a volunteer for an organisation called Habitat for Humanity with the goal of building home for those who really needed them. Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-governmental, and non-profit organisation, which was founded in 1976 and is devoted to building simple, decent, and affordable housing, to address the issues of poverty housing all over the world.

“Helping those people while living amongst them was the best experience of my life”

During this time, Myanmar was going through a lot of unrest in the country so I did have some trepidation in visiting the region.  Looking back now, I’m proud that I took that level of risk.  I remember hiding my passport during my trip to hide my identity and safeguard the people with me. Having said that, helping those people while living amongst them was the best experience of my life. We used to receive a different flower each day by the village kids as a gift for helping them.  It made me grateful and humble for the generosities I have in my life.

Opportunities such as my trip to Myanmar are just one of the reasons I love my role.  I currently work as an Associate Relationship Manager which involves managing the needs of local corporate clients within trade, lending, Islamic, cash or financial markets. This means working collaboratively with various stakeholders to provide exceptional client service and for me, this is one of the most enjoyable aspects of working in the bank.  I can take advantage of our global network, as well as the culture of working better together. Every day coming into work feels like I’m coming home, so I’m looking forward to a long and prosperous career within the organization.
