From 17 February eight of our staff will embark on a challenge never attempted before. They will make history by taking part in a 90-day Belt & Road Relay across 44 markets where we have a presence along the Belt & Road. Danny is representing our ‘ASEAN and South Asia’ region.
The Relay is widening my horizons
I’m excited about how Standard Chartered can support the Belt and Road markets. Since I was picked as one of the eight runners, I’ve tried to deepen my knowledge of the initiative.
I only started running four years ago
Cycling has always been my sport, but participating in an Iron Man 70.3km race made me determined to become better at running. I completed my inaugural full marathon in under four hours in 2015, and haven’t looked back since.
Preparing mentally is important
I went from doing a little running to joining a 250km ultra marathon crossing the Gobi Desert in 2017. I was prepared physically for the race, but knew it was more important to be mentally prepared. If the mind is willing, the body will follow.
Cycling got me fundraising
I’m one of the co-founders of the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore cycle ride ‘Ride for Sight’. A few of us were quite keen to make that journey, so we used the opportunity to raise money for Seeing is Believing, Standard Chartered’s global programme tackling avoidable blindness. Since the first ‘Ride for Sight’ in 2011, with dollar-for-dollar matching by the Bank, we have raised USD$1m.
Being picked for the Relay was a total surprise
I’m deeply honoured and extremely grateful for the opportunity. It wouldn’t be possible without the army of my colleagues working alongside me, in Malaysia and beyond.
