From 17 February eight of our staff will embark on a challenge never attempted before. They will make history by taking part in a 90-day Belt & Road Relay across 44 markets where we have a presence along the Belt & Road. Herman is representing our ‘Africa & Middle East’ region.
Visiting so many markets is amazing
Each market along the Belt and Road has its unique culture, people, terrain, weather conditions and challenges. I can’t wait to experience them all.
I was inspired to run long-distance by my boss
Our former CEO invited me and a few others to join him for a run. I had never run further than 8km, but to my surprise I ran with him the whole 21km. Every time I felt like giving up, I told my brain and legs that we weren’t going to give up. A lot of running is in the mind. If your mind decides you can do it, you’ll be able to.
Running helps me overcome my fears
Every time someone tells me a distance isn’t possible I will try and do it. Last year, I ran three official marathons over three consecutive weekends. It was difficult but I wanted to prove to myself that whatever you believe in, you can achieve. When I finish the Belt and Road Relay, I will be running in the Comrades ultra-marathon in South Africa, the world’s oldest and biggest race of its kind.
I am really excited about the Relay
I celebrated being picked by going out for a 43km run with some friends. For those who have been to Uganda, we ran from Kampala to Entebbe Airport.
I want to help create more awareness about Belt and Road
I am honoured to have the opportunity to talk about Standard Chartered and what we can do for our clients in the Belt and Road markets that we will be running through.
