Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater (ABU) / Visa Account Updater (VAU) FAQs

1. What is Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater (ABU) / Visa Account Updater (VAU) program?

Through the Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater / Visa Account Updater programs, Standard Chartered Bank helps clients who have recurring payments to set up their card details saved with merchants to enjoy a seamless transition when their credit and/or debit card held with the Bank is reissued.

2. How does ABU/VAU work?

Clients who have recurring payment transactions or frequently shop online on e-commerce platforms may opt to save their card details with the merchants for a smoother experience. In the event of any change to the card details, clients are usually required to update the new card details with all the merchant(s). ABU/VAU offers convenience to clients as it allows the updated card details to be provided to participating merchants on their behalf, thus preventing/reducing transaction declines (due to changes in card details).

3. Does the ABU/VAU program compromise the security of the card number?

No, this program is a safe and secure way to ensure your card details are updated with the participating merchants.

4. Is ABU/VAU applicable to all Standard Chartered cards?

Yes, ABU/VAU is applicable to Standard Chartered Mastercard credit and debit cards.

5. How do I enrol in ABU/VAU?

You are automatically enrolled for ABU/VAU. If you prefer not to be enrolled, you may opt out by contacting us at +603 – 7711 8888. However, if you do not update your card details with the participating merchants, any recurring payments may be declined and merchants may charge a late payment fee.

6. What are some examples of card-on-file setup?

a. Payments processed using card details that you have stored with merchant(s) or service provider(s), for example:

  • Online retailers (e-commerce platforms)
  • Digital wallets

b. Recurring payments you may have set up with a merchant or service provider using your card details:

  • Insurance
  • Telecommunications providers
  • Utilities

7. What if my card has been replaced because of fraud?

When your card is replaced due to fraud, the Bank updates ABU/VAU with your new card details. If you opt out of ABU/VAU, your card details will not be linked and any merchants having your old card details will not receive your new card details.

8. Will my card details be automatically updated for all my card-on-file setup(s)?

ABU/VAU is only available to participating merchants (participation is at merchant’s discretion). To avoid potential late payment fees, please check with your merchant to ensure your card details are updated.

9. If I have multiple card-on-file setups or recurring payments set up with merchants and I would like to opt-out of ABU/VAU for one, can this be done?

You can only opt-in or out of ABU/VAU as a whole, hence if you would like to opt-out for only one card-on-file setup or recurring payment, you will have to opt-out of ABU/VAU completely and then manually set up your card details with the merchants again.

10. If I have opted-out of ABU/VAU and want to opt-in again, can this be done?

Yes, you may contact us at +603 – 7711 8888 to opt-out or opt-in of ABU/VAU.

11. How soon will the opt-out / opt-in of ABU/VAU take effect?

It will take up to 2 business days from the day you contact us to take effect. However, if the opt-out / opt-in date is close to a date on which you have a recurring payment set up, your request may not take effect on time, hence please monitor your payment(s) in the event of such time gaps.
