What is malware? And what are the types of malware attacks I can be a victim of?

Malware, is an intrusive software developed by hackers to steal data and damage computers, networks, and servers.

The most popular types of malware include:

  • Ransomware – hacks your device and blackmails you
  • Virus – infects your system by replicating itself
  • Spyware – steals your data
  • Adware – spams you with pop-up ads
  • Trojan – sneaks onto your computer like a normal program to gain access to your system.

Beware of the latest malware attacks

Scammers can trick you with software designed to gain unauthorised access to digital devices, including your computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

The latest malware scams to watch out for include:

  • Download prompts – under the lure of rewards
  • Fake calls/messages – sharing malicious links
  • Malicious QR codes – leading to malware downloads

Once a device is infected, scammers can steal your confidential data including PIN, OTP, user ID, and passwords to conduct fraudulent transactions from your account.

Stay vigilant against malware attacks

Here are some tips to protect yourself.

  • Only download apps from official app stores
  • Keep software and applications updated
  • Verify the legitimacy of online offers and be wary of unusual download or payment requests
  • Review app permissions carefully
  • Uninstall applications requesting excessive access and permissions
  • If you suspect you have been compromised, turn on ‘flight mode”, turn off wifi to disable malicious network communications, and perform anti-virus/anti-malware scan on your device

Be your own detective and spot the tell-tale signs of a malware attack.

Watch out for:

  • Apps on your phone that you don’t recognize
  • Sudden performance issues such as faster battery drain, longer app load times, heating of the device, etc.
  • Abrupt shutting down of your device
  • Unexplained increase in data usage
  • Unusual amount of pop-up ads
  • Unusual phone bills
  • Redirection to suspicious web pages
  • Unexpected SMS texts with OTP

Have a suspicion? Seek help immediately.

If you suspect that you are a victim of fraud, please lodge a police report immediately via the Singapore Police Force website or at any police station island-wide. If your login credentials have been compromised, call our Contact Centre and select option 9 to instantly suspend your Online Banking, SC Mobile and Online Trading access. Reactivation of access to these platforms can only be done in person at any of our branches.

We have recently enhanced our anti-malware capabilities on the SC Mobile app to prevent scammers from logging into our customers’ bank accounts.

SC Mobile is equipped to safeguard you against potential malware threats, by restricting access if it detects the below scenarios:

– If your Android device has apps with risky accessibility permission settings enabled, and are downloaded from untrusted app stores, you will see the following message

  • Xiaomi Market

What to do to restore access to SC Mobile:

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi & mobile data. Uninstall the app(s) shown in the error message.
  2. Or turn off “Accessibility” for the app(s) via your phone’s Setting menu.

How to remove malware from your phone: 

  1. The recommended step is to do a factory reset of your phone.
  2. After the factory reset, use a different PIN when reinstalling SC Mobile and use biometrics authentication whenever possible.

– If we detect screen mirroring or sharing happening on your device

This may be a sign of a malware attack. To safeguard your banking account, access to the SC Mobile app will be restricted while screen-sharing or mirroring is going on.
