Why Tanzania, Why this long?

Tanzania is one of the few economies in Africa and the world with a well diversified base of economic growth that has allowed an average of 7% GDP growth for last 10 years consecutively.

It is the largest country in East Africa, lying immediately South of the equator and covers an area of 945,000 square km. The business capital of Tanzania is Dar-es-Salaam and Dodoma is a political capital. The national language is Kiswahili, but English is spoken in most urban areas.

The country has more than 120 ethnic groups and the estimated population of the country as at 2016 was 51.04 million people. Despite the vast cultural aspects, Tanzania remains united as One Nation, mainly from the Socialist Values instilled by the founding father of the Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, and the Kiswahili language, which is spoken by all people in Tanzania. The country is expected to be one of the top fifth most populous countries worldwide by 2050.

The Bank is confident of the future growth of Tanzania. The large and growing domestic population, strategic location, abundance of natural resources and internal political stability continue to present a uniquely exciting market for Standard Chartered.

Our achievements

The Bank has revolutionized banking in Tanzania.

  • We changed the traditional banking practices of having to do all monetary transactions at a banking hall by introducing the country’s first Automated Teller Machine in 1997 – this was such a big milestone in the banking history in Tanzania that the Bank was requested to have it preserved at the National Museum.
  • In 2004 we enhanced banking practices in Tanzania by introducing the country’s first Visa Electron Debit card, enabling our clients to access their funds whilst travelling outside the country, thus nullifying the practice of having to travel with a lot cash.
  • In embracing diversity and inclusion, we were the first bank in Tanzania to introduce a women’s only account called the Diva Account. This product, with its special features, further enhanced the savings culture amongst women in Tanzania.
  • In leveraging on technological advancements we were also the first bank to introduce Web Banking services for Corporate Clients – the list goes on …

More than Banking…

Whilst we are revered for our banking products and services in Tanzania, we are also respected for the unique Sustainability Projects that we have been doing in Tanzania. Our flagship project, Seeing is Believing, has touched the lives of millions of people in Tanzania. The phase IV of the project, which ended last year, has changed the lives of millions of children in Tanzania – over 360,000 children accessed eye health services and have received eye equipment as prescribed, over 2,000 children received surgery for cataracts and other eye complications, over 5,400 children with significant refractive error have received spectacles and 1,700 children with low vision have received a low vision devices and / or specialized refraction. Additionally, over 1,000 health workers at different levels have received training and were oriented in eye care and 17 centers were provided with clinical and non-clinical equipment needed to deliver child eye-care services. Ultimately, over 17 million Tanzanian children will benefit through conducive changes in national policies, strengthening of national coordination and promoting child eye health.

Through the GOAL project, the Bank has reached over 15,000 adolescent girls and boys with special training on Life Skills. The generation that was covered by the project continues to produce more confident and independent youths.

As we mark the Centenary Anniversary the Bank is looking at leveraging on its Financial Literacy Pillar to empower more Tanzanians with Financial skills and knowledge which is key for the country’s economic development. We will also launch the next phase of the GOAL project to reach out to the next 15,000 adolescent girls and boys.

Now and the next 100 years

Benchmarking on our strong foundations and legacy that has been created over the years since our inception in Tanzania, coupled with disciplined execution of our strategy, we are very optimistic on growing the business by four fold by 2021, leveraging on the immense opportunities in our Market.

We, therefore, continue to be confident of the country’s economic growth prospects and Tanzania will continue to present a uniquely exciting market for the Standard Chartered Group.
