Before her appointment as Board Chairperson in February 2022, Maria served as an Independent Non-Executive Director having been appointed to the Board in April 2021.

Maria is a senior economist with 14 years’ experience at the World Bank, where she focused on East Asia, Sothern Africa and Uganda and took part in a number of projects aimed at improving transport and power infrastructure as well as urban studies, among others. She served as the Minister of Finance Planning and Economic Development of Uganda from 2011-2015 and thereafter as a Senior Advisor to the President of Uganda on finance matters.

She is a non-state expert in the 17-member governing council of the Global Green Growth Initiative, an intergovernmental organisation which aims to promote a green growth paradigm to balance macro-economic growth objectives of member nations. Mrs. Kiwanuka is the founder and General Manager of Radio One and Radio Two in Uganda as well as the founder of the International Africa Media Leaders Forum. She also previously served as Vice Chairperson of the Local Government Finance Commission and the Chairperson of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, the Presidential Investment Round Table (Business Climate) and United Bank of Africa.

Maria graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Makerere University and a Master of Science in Business Administration from the London Business School.

Dorothy was appointed an Independent Non-Executive Director for Standard Chartered Bank Uganda effective May 2018.

She is the Dean, School of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) at Makerere University and Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

She is also the founder of Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) whose mission is to promote the use of ICTS by women and women organisations and she is a researcher with netLabs!UG, a regional solutions provider in innovative telecommunication and networking technologies.

Dorothy is currently the Board Chairperson, Uganda Communications Commission as well as Chairperson of RENU Labs. In addition, Dr. Okello is the Director of Innovation at ResilientAfrica Network at Makerere University and a Director of Uganda Resilience Innovation Network, Technology Consultants, Makerere Modern Secondary School and Elizabeth Academy.

She has also previously served as Chairperson of the Research and Education Network for Uganda, Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Uganda Institute of Information & Communications Technology (UICT), President of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE), and as an inaugural member of the National Board of Action Aid International Uganda (AAIU).

Dorothy holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical) from Makerere University, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas, United States, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering from McGill University, Canada.

Matthias Nalyanya was appointed an Independent Non-Executive Director for Standard Chartered Bank Uganda in August 2017.

Matthias is an Advocate of the High Court and all other Courts of Judicature in Uganda, having been admitted to the bar in 1992. He is the Founding Partner and currently Managing Partner of M/s Lex Uganda Advocates and Solicitors, one of the leading law firms in the country.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Capital Markets Authority and additionally, Radio Sapienta Limited. He is also a member of a number of professional societies including the Uganda Law Society, East African Law Society, International Bar Association and the London School of Economics – Uganda Society.

Matthias holds a Bachelor of Law from Makerere University, Kampala and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Kampala. He also holds a Masters’ of Law (LLM) Degree in Commercial Law (International Tax Law, Law of Multinational Enterprises, International Business Transactions and Alternative Dispute Resolution) from the London School of Economics, University of London.

Moses John Ssebugwawo was appointed to the Board of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda as an Independent Non-Executive Director in December 2023.

Mr. Ssebugwawo is a highly accomplished professional with over 25 years’ experience in the field of finance and accounting. He is one of the founders and the Managing Director of ABS Consulting Group Limited, a Ugandan independent management consulting firm.

Mr. Ssebugwawo’s journey began in 1998 when he joined Ernst & Young in the Ugandan office. In 2002, he was posted to Ernst & Young Australia and worked in both the Sydney and Adelaide offices. Prior to his return to Uganda, Mr. Ssebugwawo also worked as a Corporate Internal Audit Manager with Woolworths Limited, the largest Australian retail company that operates more than 3,000 supermarkets in Australia, New Zealand, India and Hong Kong. In 2008, Mr. Ssebugwawo was appointed by Ernst & Young to spearhead the startup of the Forensic Investigation Division. As an Executive Director and regional Leader of the division, he was responsible for service delivery to clients in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

Mr. Ssebugwawo currently serves as a member of the Audit Committee of the Board of Excel Insurance Company Limited. He was also advisor to the Board Audit Committee of Centenary Rural Development Bank, a Board member of the Migrant Resource Centre of South Australia and a Board Member of the African Communities Council of South Australia.

Mr. Ssebugwawo holds a Master of Science Degree in Finance and Accounting and a Bachelor of Commerce degree, both from Makerere University. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA), a Member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), as well as a Member of CPA Australia’s Continuing Professional Development – Training & e-Learning Facilitators. He is a proud Rotarian and the incoming President of the Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese Islands.

Rola Abu Manneh was appointed to the Board of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda as a Non-Executive Director in May 2023.
She is the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered UAE, a role she has held since August 2018. Rola was the first Emirati woman to head a bank in the UAE and, in her current role, has been responsible for transforming the UAE business into one of the biggest five markets for the Standard Chartered Group.

Rola is also on the Boards of Standard Chartered (Pakistan) Limited and Dubai International Chamber, as well as MyZoi Financial Inclusion Technologies L.L.C and Appro Onboarding Solutions FZ-LLC, digital ventures through the Standard Chartered Bank subsidiary, SC Ventures.

Rola is a member of the Global Council for Sustainable Development Goal 5 – Gender Equality (‘SDG5’); a UAE delegate in G20Empower; a member of the NYUAD Vice Chancellor’s Leadership Council; a director on the Board of Make-A-Wish Foundation UAE; and an advisory council member for both the Global Summit of Women 2023 and the Fortune Global Forum 2023.

Before joining Standard Chartered, Rola was the Head of Corporate & Investment Banking for Abu Dhabi at First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB). In this role, her responsibility was to maintain relationships between FAB and its client base, including government, government-related entities, elite customer groups, family corporations, local corporations, multinational corporations and commercial banking services. Prior to this, Rola served as General Manager of FAB’s Wholesale Banking Group, which comprised of Project Finance Syndications, Financial Institutions Group and Global Transaction Banking.

Rola completed her studies at the University of London – Royal Holloway and Bedford New College and holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics & Operational Research.

Kariuki was appointed to the Board of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda as a Non-Executive Director in July 2019.

Kariuki has 30 years of banking experience and currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Kenya and East Africa.

Prior to this appointment, Kariuki served as the Global Head, Retail Distribution for Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore where he was influential in formulating global strategies in building the future of Retail Branch and Voice and Virtual landscapes through digitisation of the physical channels. He also previously held the role of Regional Head of Retail Clients, Africa between 2013 and 2015 and was instrumental in transforming the Consumer Banking divisions of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya and the Africa Region.

Kariuki was an Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya from 2009 to 2013. He has also held senior positions at Absa Bank Kenya PLC. He serves as a director on the Boards of Tawi Fresh Kenya Limited and Solvezy Technology Kenya Limited. Additionally, he sits on the Board of the UN Global Compact and is a director on various other Standard Chartered Bank Kenya subsidiary Boards.

Kariuki holds a Bachelor of Arts (HONS) in Economics and Sociology from University of Nairobi. He is an avid learner and had participated actively in various professional courses including Senior Management Courses in GIBBS Business School – South Africa, SAID Business School, London Oxford, INSEAD Business School Singapore.

Kelvin was appointed Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director Finance of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda in September 2015.

Kelvin is a seasoned finance professional, having over 20 years’ experience in financial accounting and administration having previously served as Financial Controller and Chief Financial Officer / Executive Director, Finance and Administration in Standard Chartered Bank Zambia, one of our four listed subsidiaries in Africa. He has had working assignments in Tanzania, Uganda, UK, Nigeria and Kenya (on secondment to Save the Children International).

He is also a board member of the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE) and he is currently a member of the ACCA Global Accounting for Business Forum. He is a past member of the Board of the Zambia Revenue Authority, past member of the Audit and Risk committee of the Radiation Protection Agency and Institute of Directors, a Council member and Ambassador of the local Zambian ACCA body and a past Treasurer of the Bankers Associations of Zambia. Sanjay was appointed Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda in June 2022.

He has a career spanning over 20 years in Banking across Africa, Asia and Europe, he has worked in senior roles in the UK, Kenya, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Cote d’ Ivoire, with responsibilities overseeing operations in the Standard Chartered Bank business in Africa and India. His most recent role prior to this appointment, was CEO, Standard Chartered Bank, Tanzania.

Sanjay is recognized for driving significant business transformation, in his role as the CEO, he has won significant accolades for his position including his recent prestigious award as Africa’s most inspiring corporate leader at the Consumer Choice Awards in Tanzania. He is credited with enhancing business performance, building and optimizing on human capital, championing responsible business and sustainability, driving digital integration and innovation and being a force for good for national and global prosperity.

Sanjay is currently Chairman of Professional Accountants in Business Advisory Group (PAIB AG) of International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and Deputy Chair of YPO’s Sustainable Business Network. He is also a Board member of TradeMark Africa Board. His past key governance representations included being Chairman of CEO Roundtable Tanzania, Deputy Chairman of Tanzania Bankers Association (TBA), Executive member of Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC), Director of Association of Tanzanian Employers (ATE), President of Lincoln Community School (International School in Ghana), Chairman of Ghana Business Coalition against HIV & AIDS (GBCA), Director Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) and Founder member of FSSC forum in Kenya.

His professional credentials and qualifications include being a Chartered Accountant through NBAA Tanzania, a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (FCCA), a Fellow of the Institute of Information Management Africa (Nigeria). He also holds an MBA in Finance, a management post graduate qualification in HRD and a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Sanjay represents the bank in various leadership forums.
